Fresh as a Daisy

My Buff Orpington is named Daisy.

She was such a friendly little chick. Whenever someone would come to see the chicks, we would let them hold Daisy because she was so calm.

When they were chicks, Olive and Daisy looked very similar. They were both yellow. However, as Olive became a red color, Daisy stayed her cute yellow.

Here, Olive is the yellow chick closer to the top of the picture.
Daisy is the one closer to the bottom.

If Piper is stupid, Daisy is smart. She was the first one to learn how to take dust baths. (This is when chickens scratch dirt and dust through their feathers. This cleans them.)

She is high in the pecking order, but doesn't really seem to care. She is always apart from the others. Always kind of doing her own thing.

Another thing about Daisy is her size. She is definitely the biggest girl in my flock. I think a lot of that might just be fluffy feathers, but still! She is huge!

She always has an almost thoughtful expression on her face, which I absolutely love!

   See you next Monday!

Daisy's Guide to Eating Bugs

The other day I was sitting out with the chickens and Daisy caught my eye. She was eating a worm. But, she was doing it in her own special way. I had ever seen a chicken eating a worm like this. So, here is Daisy's Guide to Eating Bugs.

Step 1: Find a Bug

Once you find your bug be sure to run away as fast as possible to keep it away from the other chickens. They want the bug as much as you do.

Step 2: Kill The Bug
This is the most important step. It is vital, VITAL, that you totally kill the bug. Others are not as concerned with this step but it is extremely important. Pick up the bug. Wave the bug around. Put the bug down. Repeat.

To totally kill a bug it takes patience and time. This is exhausting.

I recommend sitting down.

Step 3: Eat the Bug

The best part!

Step 4: Find a New Bug
No matter how many bugs you eat, there are always more... So go find the next one!

Arrival

The chicks are here! We got the call at 10:10 am on Tuesday. (I was very impressed by this because they hatched on Monday and had to come from Ohio to New Hampshire.) We ran over to the post office as soon as we could and picked them up at 10:30.

One of my big worries was one of the chicks would die on the trip. However I am happy to say this did not happen and they all arrived safely!

   And so let me introduce...

Nutmeg (Welsummer)

Piper (Easter Egger)

Lizzie (Barred Rock)

Raven (Australorp)

Daisy (Buff Orpington)

Olive (Golden Comet)

Speckles (Specked Sussex)

Sleepy (Double Laced Barnevelder)
Originally Penny but thanks to an unfortunate early nickname, no one will call her by her real name.

Our Chickens: How It Began

Our adventure with chickens began in 2010.

My Dad's work friend (I'll call her D) had a small flock and was interested in getting some chicks.  Fortunately for my family D asked us to raise them for her (my Dad was always talking to her about her chickens).  The original plan was to give them back once they grew up, but my whole family fell in love with the little puffballs and she let us keep them.

I am still so grateful for that.

So one day, D pulled into our driveway with chicks and supplies in tow.  She had brought a wire enclosure for the chicks to go outside in, so we set it up in our yard.

D then unlatched the door to a pet carrier and four of the cutest, fluffiest things I have ever seen peered through the door at the new world.

My sister and I quickly chose naming rights. I named the two yellow ones, she named the two black and white ones.

And so that is how Hazel (a Red Star), Sunny (a Buff Orpington), Julie (a Silver Laced Wyandotte), and Ceci (a Silver Speckled Hamburg) came into my life and changed it forever.
