Review: My Pet Chicken

  

 "My Pet Chicken" is the website/company that I bought my chicks from. This is a review of my experience.

   The website itself was wonderful! It had lots of breeds; both rare and common. Ordering the chicks was easy and fast. They also offered Marek's shots for the chicks. This was very important to me.

   Also, the customer service was fantastic! I emailed with a question about shipping and multiple question's about the chicks (I tend to overreact). They emailed back very quickly with very good information.

 
   Next, the shipping. This was perfect! They arrived the day after they hatched by 11:00. (This is especially impressive since the chicks were shipped from Ohio.) The box had air holes and a little heat pack which was still warm when it got to me.

   I was very impressed with the chicks themselves, as well. They all came alive and healthy. I got ONLY the number of chicks I ordered (some companies send extra for warmth), which was very nice. Also, I got my chicks sexed and so far as I can tell they are all girls.

   In fact, there was only one problem I had with this company. The cost.

   I did get some expensive rare breeds, but the cost of shipping itself was high. I didn't mind the cost because I was very specific about breeds and gender. However, if you are not willing to pay much for chicks, this is probably not your place.

  Overall, I very highly recommended this company! See you next Monday!

Beauty Is In the Eye of the Beholder

   Many people have seen chicks. Lots of people have seen chickens. But, unless you have raised chickens, you probably haven't seen their "teenage stage".

   They go in cute...

They come out beautiful...

But in the middle, well, all you can do in wait...

Pin feathers (a growing feather surrounded by a feather shaft) start to poke though the chick fluff.

You can see this in Nutmeg's tail (above).

Sleepy might have been the worst. It was... not pretty.

Sweet little Daisy. Her molt was not as bad as the other's for some reason.

Oh, Piper and those big puffy cheeks...

Wow sorry... A lot of pictures in this one. But, are there ever too many pictures of chicks?

Hit the Spot

   So this is my next installment of the chicken's personalities. Speckles is this weeks lucky participant.
   Such a cute little chick! Well, I have never seen a chick that is not cute, but still!

   She is very curious. Not overly curious like Piper; Piper is in a curiosity level all her own. Still, very curious.

Here she is pecking her own toe. Did she not know what it was?

   Speckles also loves chasing bugs. I have seen her run from one end of the pen to the other. Always watching the bug she was running after.

   Speckles is sweet. Not the most friendly, but very friendly none the less. She might not be the first to come over to see me. However, when she does, she stays on my lap. Sometimes until I have to lift her off. 

   Speaking of picking her up, she doesn't mind it at all. I can just lift her and she doesn't complain at all. I have never had a chicken been so calm about this. 

   All this is beside the fact that she is gorgeous! Speckles is a great little chicken that I am loving having in my flock!

Life Is Good

   Life sometimes has a way of working out.
 
   I had an awful week. Tons of tests. (Don't worry, I am not just going to complain this whole time.)

   Anyway, very stressed I came home from school on Wednesday. All the sudden, I saw this...

Then her baby came out of the woods to join her.

So then, feeling better, I went out to see the chickens. They always have a way of cheering me up.

But, then when I went inside...

We have been hatching butterflies and finally the first one hatched!

More on that another time.

All this on the day I needed cheering up the most...

Fall In Love

   Tomorrow is the first day of Autumn! This is my absolute favorite season. Cool but not cold... Sunny but breezy... Ah! Autumn! So, to celebrate here are some pictures I took the other day.

There is this giant maple tree in our side yard. The leaves always change really early. It has already started to change and it is beautiful!

The first bright red leaves have started to fall!

Speaking of red, I planted some marigolds in the summer and now they are in full bloom.

OK, so this one is orange. You get the point...

I showed the chickens that bright leaf from before. Lets just say they were excited...

Nutmeg was particularly interested

Then she stole the whole leaf (sigh again).

Once Lizzy got tired of my leaf, Speckles investigated.
